WhatsApp has joined the “elite” application club

December 2, 2021

Android Police reported that WhatsApp messenger for the Android operating system has surpassed five billion downloads. In general, this is not a record figure for the messenger, since this figure does not include installations on Apple gadgets.

Only a handful of Android apps have hit the 5 billion download mark – most of them pre-installed by Google: YouTube, Google Maps, Google Search, Gmail, Google Text-to-Speech, and Chrome.

This is the second app, created outside of Google, to be included in the elite club of apps that have been installed on Android over 5 billion times. Recall that last year Facebook was able to join this club, and now the company’s messenger, WhatsApp, has done it.

It is worth noting that this result was achieved largely thanks to partnerships with major smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung and Huawei, which since the beginning of last year were allowed to pre-install the WhatsApp messenger on some of their devices. So, for example, users of the new Galaxy S6 could find WhatsApp on their smartphone immediately after purchase.

According to the latest data, the monthly audience of WhatsApp worldwide exceeds 1.5 billion people.
